The Sonographer’s Pivotal Role in the Use of Ultrasound Enhancing Agents

Biography

Shane Balthazaar is a clinical and research sonographer, currently practicing at Vancouver General, St. Paul's, and Lionsgate Hospitals in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 2016, Shane was hired on as an instructor for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at BCIT. Shane completed the Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography program at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. Since then, he has continued to play an active role in the sonography profession such as volunteering for the Guyana Program to Advance Cardiac Care to train physicians and aspiring health care professionals. Shane also travels to remote communities across Canada, including Bella Bella, Bella Coola, and Whitehorse, as part of outreach programs that ensure access to essential cardiac services. For the last few years, Shane has worked with the MLS to help conduct the pre-season medical screenings for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Additionally, he plays a pivotal role in shaping the standards and practices of sonography through his involvement with the Professional Practice and Exam Committees for Sonography Canada. In 2021, Shane completed his PhD from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, supported by The Robert H.N. Ho Scholarship.
