Dr. Sanfilippo received Bachelor of Science (Honours, Life Sciences) and MD degrees at Queen’s University. He undertook training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, followed by a postgraduate research fellowship in Echocardiography at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined the academic and clinical staff of Queen’s University in 1989. He is now a Professor of Medicine and Cardiology with clinical appointments at both Hotel Dieu and Kingston General Hospitals. Dr. Sanfilippo’s major clinical interest has been in Echocardiography. He has published numerous articles, including research in echocardiography, valvular heart disease and cardiac disease in women. He is past president of the Canadian Society of Echocardiography, and primary author of Canadian Consensus documents regarding standards of practice for Echocardiography. He has worked on a number of Quality Improvement initiatives building on that work, including the Accreditation Canada Echocardiography Quality Improvement initiative, where he serves as primary advisor and Chair of the Echocardiography Accreditation and Quality Improvement Panel. He has also been involved in medical education and administration. He has held numerous administrative positions at Queen’s and Kingston Health Science Centre. He recently completed three terms as Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education after which he was appointed as Senior Advisor, Educational Innovation and Expansion, overseeing the development of the Queen’s Lakeridge Family Medicine MD Program. He has won numerous awards for teaching and leadership, including the Canadian Society of Echocardiography Award of Excellence, Queen’s University Principals Award for Leadership in Medical Education, the Connell Award for Medical Education and the Queen’s University Distinguished Service Award.
